Understanding the Part B Giveback

A giveback reduces the Part B premium owed — it is not unrestricted bonus money. Explain it accurately.

Some Medicare Advantage plans offer a reduction toward the Part B premium. It is not unrestricted bonus money — explain it accurately.

What it actually is A giveback reduces some or potentially all of the applicable Part B premium the beneficiary owes, up to the amount actually owed. For beneficiaries whose Part B premium is deducted from Social Security, this may eventually result in less being withheld — but processing takes time, and you should never guarantee an exact timeline.
Example Part B premium (illustrative only)$174.70 / month
Example plan giveback amount (illustrative only)$50.00 / month
Example remaining premium$124.70 / month
These numbers are examples only Verify the current Part B premium and the exact giveback amount for the specific plan being discussed — both figures change and vary by plan and by year.

When giveback matters

Ask "How important is the amount coming out of your Social Security check every month?"

If the client strongly values this, dig into why — it often reveals that monthly cash flow is a top concern, which can point toward other conversations worth having (see Lessons 20 and 24).
